Larry Knapp

Expressing myself in the spoken language has always been difficult. In part I believe it was caused by my dyslexia. Lacking a firm grasp of phonics, activities such as reading aloud caused much anxiety for me. In my adult life, simple things such as reading and making sense of captioned films remains a chore. In my paintings, I discovered my own voice and the vocabulary that accompanies it. My audience hears my voice and understands my language.

In many of my paintings, I have chosen animals as my bridge to communicating with the viewer. These wondrous creatures speak for me in a way my words never could. The subjects each have their own expression, their own mood, just as humans do. I constantly experiment to create movement, depth, and visual impressions that I hope will leave a lasting impression. I want the viewer to get lost in the worlds I create.

Many of my pieces include birds. Perhaps I use them as a metaphor for freedom and abandon, perhaps I like the natural movements and bright colors of birds. Whatever the reason, for the time being, birds are a large part of my "art vocabulary". As with all the animals I paint, they help me connect with nature and the elemental forces that are transcendent. My painting fulfills my need to be part of a different reality: sometimes serene, often primitive, but always fascinating.

As viewers experience my work, with its wild colors, the sometimes abstract backgrounds, and dreamy landscapes, I hope they will be transported to their own dreamlike world. Like a bird, or a fish, I want them to journey with me to new destinations where words are not necessary to experience the joys and existential struggles of life.
